NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma junior defensive back Michael Thompson has completed the first stage of his recovery from a tragic automobile accident when he was released from University Hospital after just one week. He will now spend several weeks in a rehabilitation hospital in Oklahoma City.

"Michael has made unbelievable progress and the doctors felt that it was time for him to move to the next stage of his recovery process," said University Hospital spokesperson Alan Postan. "He had his final facial surgery to deal with his broken jaw the day before leaving our facility. Now the focus will shift to his legs and ankles. There's no question that his quick recovery has been a result of the tremendous physical condition he was in prior to the accident. However, he still has been impressing our doctors."

At this time, the doctors and coaches say it's still too early to make any decision on Michael's playing future. The entire coaching staff and many of the players have visited the hospital throughout the past week.

"You can see Michael getting better every day," said OU head coach Bob Stoops. "He has come a long way in a very short period of time. The doctors and medical staff at University Hospital did a tremendous job for Michael and his family. We would like to thank them, plus all the other people who have called, written or stopped by the hospital wishing the best for Michael and his family. He still has plenty of recovery remaining, but he's heading in the right direction."

Anyone wishing to send cards or other words of encouragement, can do so through the OU Football Office. Well-wishes can also be sent via the Michael Thompson graphic on the right side of the OU Football page on www.soonersports.com.
