Softball Advances To Big 12 Semis With Come-From-Behind Win

OKLAHOMA CITY - Fifth-ranked Oklahoma (43-7) scored two runs in the third to rally for a 2-1 win over Texas Tech (33-20) in its second game of the Big 12 Tournament. A crowd of 1,156 at Don Porter Hall of Fame Stadium witnessed the Sooners come from behind for their 16th consecutive win.
OU starter Jennifer Stewart (31-3) picked up her 11th win in as many starts after allowing just two hits. The Red Raiders took the early 1-0 lead in the second when first baseman Carmen Grindell led off with a solo home run to center field. It was the first homer hit off the Sooners since March 30 and ended a string of 13 scoreless innings that Tech has suffered against OU.
Big 12 Player of the Year Kelli Braitsch led off the first with a single down the left-field line, but Texas Tech starter Amanda Renfro (30-17) struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning.
Sophomore Jennifer Stump singled to right and Erin Evans sacrificed her over to second. But the next two batters hit up into the air for the final two outs.
In the bottom of the third, Renfro led off with back-to-back walks to LaKisha Washington and Braitsch. It proved costly when Lisa Carey singled to center field to score Washington. With Braitsch also getting the signal to go for the score, the ball made it back to the catcher, but she slid under the tag and reached back for the safe call at home.
The 2-1 lead had to hold up as Renfro retired the final 11 batters in order. The first-team All-Big 12 pitcher struck out eight while limiting the Sooners to a single hit in each of the three innings.
For Stewart, the home run in the second and a single to lead off the third were the only hits surrendered. She closed out the game by retiring the final 14 batters she faced.
Oklahoma is now one win away from the championship game and will play at 5 p.m. on Friday. It will face the winner of the Nebraska-Kansas game that will be played at 1:30 p.m.
