OU Men's Gymnasts Advance to NCAA Finals

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The top-ranked University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team scored a season-high 218.300 en route to dominating the first session of the NCAA Qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, to advance to the NCAA Team Finals. The Sooners' score was the highest by any collegiate men's gymnastics team this season and broke their own mark of 217.725. OU has posted the nation's highest score in each of its last three competitions.

In addition to setting a season-best team score, OU posted season highs on pommel horse (37.10) and vault (36.275). Three Sooners - junior David Johnston and Josh Landis and Daniel Furney - posted season bests on pommel horse. Landis' score of 9.45 was the highest by a Sooner this season and led the first qualifying session. Landis also set a season best on parallel bars (8.75) and vault (9.00). Senior Gabe Hansen scored season highs in three events - all-around (52.40), floor exercise (9.10) and vault (8.95). Sophomore Brett Covey and senior Brendan O'Neil led on the first qualifying session on rings and floor, respectively.

"The last two meets our scores have gone up by at least .5 of a point," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "Today was an easy day compared to the last few days of training. Tomorrow, we'll come in and stretch and I'll tell the team all the reasons we're going to win."

OU returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. EDT for the NCAA Team Finals where it will be joined by Ohio State (217.075), Michigan (216.850), California (214.550), Penn State (213.625) and Michigan State (213.350).
