NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team, ranked 15th by Mastercard, moved up three places to finish in seventh at the 2001 Big 12 Women's Golf Tournament at Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes, Iowa. Playing with only four players, the Sooners shot the fourth lowest round on the final day of competition (312, +19) to finish with a total score of 965 (+101). Oklahoma State won the team competition with a final score of 925 (+61).
Freshman Lisa Meldrum shot the lowest round of the tournament for the second day in a row after blitzing the field yesterday with a second-round 67. Meldrum fired a third-round 71 to tie for first place with a final score of 227 (+11) and force a playoff with Oklahoma State's Maria Boden and Missouri's Amelia Moses. Boden sank a 25-foot birdie putt on the first hole of the playoff to win the individual title.
"I'm extremely ecstatic about Lisa's play," said OU Head Coach Carol Ludvigson. "Without her first-round score, it would have been phenomenal. I'm proud of how she and everyone on our team came back and played after the first day."
Redshirt-freshman Hope Edge carded her lowest round of the tournament (78) to finish tied for 29th with an overall score of 244 (+28). Three strokes back was junior Jennifer Tannehill, who also improved with a 79 to tie for 38th with a final score of 247. Sophomore Allison Johnson finished in 44th after carding a final round of 84.
"We really learned a lot from this experience," said Ludvigson. "We made some mental mistakes but those will eventually make us stronger. We will definitely take this experience to regionals."
The Sooners continue their postseason at the NCAA Regional Championships May 10-12.
