NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team will compete in the 2001 Big 12 Championships April 23-25 in Rhodes, Iowa, at the Harvester Golf Course.

The Sooners won the team crown last year after edging Oklahoma State to take the title by one stroke. Last year Jennifer James claimed runner-up honors for the Sooners but will not to compete this year because of medical reasons.

OU will look for solid performances from juniors Wendy Martin and Jennifer Tannehill, sophomore Allison Johnson, redshirt-freshman Hope Edge and true freshman Lisa Meldrum..

OU Claims First Title of Season

The Oklahoma lady golfers captured their first title of the season at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic April 9-10 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course, with a tournament record883. Sophomore Allison Johnson fired a 218 for runner-up honors and finished behind Stephanie Dukes of Texas Tech, who also set a tournament record with her eight-under 208.

Junior Jennifer Tannehill carded a 220 for third place while fellow junior Wendy Martin finished in fourth. Freshman Lisa Meldrum placed sixth, just one stroke behind Martin.

"I feel better about the Big 12 Championships this year than going into last year when we won. Last week no one stood out as an individual and that helped us as a team. I think that we are really close right now and that is the perfect place to be for next week. The weather will be tough but we are mentally tough right now without a weak link. We are looking to take away an individual title as well as a team title."
