Norman, Okla. - Three University of Oklahoma women's basketball players were among several OU student-athletes honored at the third annual Max Weitzenhoffer Scholar Athlete Breakfast Tuesday morning inside the Grand Ballroom of the OU Student Union. The women's basketball team tied the football team for most individual award winners with four each.
Senior forward Desiree Taylor (Richardson, Texas) was the recipient of the Conference Medal Award, an award that only given to senior who has completed their eligibility and who has the most outstanding record in athletics and academics. Taylor, a four-year letterwinner, ended her Sooner career averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and shooting 51.7 percent from the field. The three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection also supports an impressive 3.17 grade point average in chemical engineering.
Junior Stacey Dales (Brockville, Ontario, Canada) came away with two awards this morning. Dales repeated her Most Outstanding Scholar Athlete of the Year award and for the second consecutive year the women's basketball team won the Athletic Director's Leadership Award. This was given to Dales for her drive and commitment to the university and the women's basketball program this past season. Former Sooner great Phylesha Whaley won the award last year. Dales, a 2001 Verizon Academic All-American second teamer, boasts a 3.72 grade point average in communications while averaging a team-best 16.0 points and 7.3 assists per game. She also contributed 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. Dales became Oklahoma's first ever Kodak and Associated Press first team All-American after leading the Sooners to their second Big 12 Conference regular season title and NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. OU finished the season ranked seventh in the country with an overall record of 28-6.
Freshman Stephanie Luce (Southlake, Texas) was named the Jay Myers award winner. This award is the most prestigious for freshmen student-athletes. Luce's Jay Myers Award marks the fourth consecutive year that an OU women's basketball player has received this honor. Luce appeared in 19 games as a freshman and had a team-best 92.9 free throw percentage. The Texan was one of five freshman to win the award today that earned a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2000 term. Other winners were Christina Barlow (volleyball), Blake Johnston (men's basketball), Renaldo Works (football) and Darren Hutchins (track).
