NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team won the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic today with a tournament record score of 883 (+19) at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman. It marked the first win of the season for the 13th-ranked Sooners. OU carded a final-round 293 and finished the tournament 19 strokes in front of runner-up Texas Tech and 28 strokes ahead of third-place Nebraska.

Tech's Stephanie Dukes fired an even-par 72 today and earned medalist honors with a tournament record 208. Dukes shot identical rounds of 68 on Monday and finished tournament action at 8-under par.

Sophomore Allison Johnson led the OU squad with a second-place finish by recording a 218 (+2), while junior Jennifer Tannehill shot a 220 for third place. Junior Wendy Martin fired a 222 for fourth place and freshman Lisa Meldrum was one stroke behind in sixth place. Redshirt-freshman Hope Edge, who competed as an individual, carded a 233. Junior Betsy Berry shot a 238 while Marsha Gonzaga, also competing as an individual, turned in a score of 244.

"I'm extremely happy because not only did we play well as a team but we had individual triumphs," commented OU Head Coach Carol Ludvigson. "It shows that all of the girls, one through five, know they can play well and contribute. I was glad to see Lisa Meldrum come back because she hasn't been feeling well. And I'm proud of Allison Johnson because sometimes she's tough on herself. She really pulled through for us. All in all it was a great tournament for our team."

The next tournament for the Sooners will be the Big 12 Championships on April 23-25 in Rhodes, Iowa, at the Harvester Country Club. Iowa State University will host the event.
