TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Oklahoma top-ranked men's gymnastics team claimed the team title at the Southwest Cup, in Tempe, Ariz. OU posted 215.25 to outdistance second-place Michigan State (210.45), defending national champion Penn State (208.925) and Stanford (205.425). Arizona State's club team (198.325) and the Mexican National Team (191.50) also competed in the meet. Brett Covey, Everette Bierker and Steve Van Etten all won individual event titles for the Sooners.
Covey claimed his fourth straight title on the still rings, posting a career-high 9.70. Bierker took the top sport on the parallel bars (8.90) while All-American Van Etten won the horizontal bar (9.40). Van Etten also finished third on the pommel horse (9.20) and on vault (9.10) where he tied freshman teammate Jock Stevens. The Sooners also claimed second and third on the high bar where Ryan Hillyer posted a 9.30 and Bierker recorded a 9.15. Brendan O'Neil finished second on the parallel bars (8.75) and Shannon Carrion placed third on the floor exercise (8.80). Competing for the first time since the Iowa meet (Feb. 3), senior Gabe Hansen posted a 9.25 to place third on horse.
The Sooners return to action on March 10 when they host No. 3 Ohio State and Stanford. Competition begins at 7 p.m.
