NORMAN, Okla. - On an afternoon that reminded most people of late November, the University of Oklahoma took to the practice fields next to Memorial Stadium for the beginning of spring football drills. It's the first time the Sooners have practiced since capturing the school's seventh national championship in January at the FedEx Orange Bowl.
"It felt great to be back at it," said OU Head Coach Bob Stoops following the two and a half-hour workout. "I thought that we had an excellent practice. You would figure that we would have some rust and that some of the players would forget things, but we really didn't. If I didn't know better I would have said was a typical regular season practice."
While the Sooners followed their normal practice schedule, the attention of the roughly 100 fans in attendance was the battle between Nate Hybl, Jason White and Hunter Wall to see who would fill the shoes of consensus All-American quarterback Josh Heupel.
"All three quarterbacks did what we thought they would do," added Stoops. "We have plenty of practices to go and nothing will be decided until we're finished. At the end of the spring we'll name a starting quarterback if there's a clear-cut starter. If not, then we'll wait until August. We're in no hurry."
The Sooners will continue spring practices tomorrow and Friday at the OU practice fields. The scrimmage set for Saturday has tentatively been set for 1:30 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium, however weather could be a factor in rescheduling.
