A Closer Look
BERKELEY, Calif. - Three OU men's gymnasts - seniors Brendan O'Neil and Steve Van Etten and sophomore Brett Covey - all claimed conference championships at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation individual event finals tonight in Berkeley, Calif. Van Etten was also named MPSF Co-Athlete of the Year and Mark Williams was named conference coach of the year for the second straight season. Last night, the Sooners claimed their third straight MPSF team title.
O'Neil, the nation's top-ranked gymnast on the floor exercise, won the conference crown on floor with a 9.60 to easily outdistance California's Cody Moore (9.25) who finished second. Covey won on still rings (9.60) and is ranked No. 1 nationally on that event. Van Etten earned the MPSF vault title (9.20) and placed second on horizontal bar (9.20). Three Sooners were conference runners-up - Shannon Carrion (rings, 9.425), Everette Bierker (vault, 9.175) and Daniel Furney (parallel bars, 9.05). Josh Landis placed third on floor with an 8.85.
"I'm excited for our conference champions - Brendan O'Neil, Steve Van Etten and Brett Covey - they were outstanding tonight," said Williams. "I would like to express my congratulations to Steve for being named MPSF Co-Athlete of the Year. He's had a tremendous season and this is an award that was earned and certainly well deserved for Steve."
Top-ranked OU returns to action when its travels to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA qualifier on April 5.
