NORMAN, Okla - niversity of Oklahoma women's basketball player Stacey Dales was one of five players named to the All-America first team by the Associated Press this week. Dales is the only junior selected to the first team and the only player who did not receive an All-America mention last season.

"It's such a great feeling," Dales said of the receiving the honor. "I know there are some very good players in this country. I've worked very hard and it has paid off. I feel like I really improved this summer playing on the Canadian olympic team It's a great accomplishment for me and for the program I am associated with. I am really excited about it."

A native of Brockville, Ontario, Dales competed for the Candian olympic team in Sydney, Australia, this past summer and has returned to have a phenomenal year for the Sooners. She earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors and is a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman-Cline Step Up Award, honoring the nation's top collegiate point guard. The junior has led OU to a 26-5 record, a No. 7 national ranking and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

"She's a really neat kid and a very gifted player," Head coach Sherri Coale said of Dales. "We're thrilled for her and she's been such a big part of our sucess. She came in here and had just gotten better and better and I don't think she's finished yet. She has a chance to do some really special things in her senior year."

Dales averages 16.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and a Big 12-leading 7.6 assists a game. Her mark for assists is also among the top 10 in the nation. She becomes the first Oklahoma player to garner AP first-team All-America honors. Former Sooner Phylesha Whaley was an honorable mention selection last year.

Joining Dales on the first team are Ruth Riley of Notre Dame, Katie Douglas of Purdue, Southwest Missouri State's Jackie Stiles and Georgia's Kelly Miller.
