A Closer Look

NORMAN, Okla. - In its top performance of the season, the top-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics team scored an NCAA season-best 217.30 to defeat fourth-ranked Ohio State (215.40) and No. 12 Stanford (206.75) in front of 743 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center. OU's previous high was 215.75 on February 18 against Michigan and Massachusetts. Sooner seniors Brendan O'Neil and Steve Van Etten, along with sophomore Brett Covey, won individual titles.

Competing in their final home competiton at OU, O'Neil claimed the floor exercise championship with a 9.50 and Van Etten won the pommel horse, posting a 9.40. Van Etten also placed second on the horizontal bar (9.20). Covey earned the title on the still rings for the fifth-straight competition by scoring a career-high 9.75.

OU swept the top-four spots on floor. Finishing behind O'Neil were Jock Stevens (9.30), Van Etten (9.10) and Gabe Hansen (9.05). Daniel Furney was runner-up on pommel horse (9.15) and parallel bars (8.85). Everette Bierker placed third in a pair of events, the parallel bars (8.80) and horizontal bar (9.10). Sophomore Shannon Carrion was third on rings with a 9.40.

"This was definitely our best score of the season," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "We had a high hit percentage and got on a roll. We performed very well. It was good to get Daniel (Furney) and Gabe (Hansen) back in the lineup and at almost 100-percent. We still, possibly, have another point in us. Right now, I think that we're the team to beat."

OU will not return to action until March 23-24 when it travels to Berkeley, Calif., to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships.
