OU Men's Gymnasts Topple Iowa, 215.550-210.475

A Closer Look

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The second-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics dominated in a 215.550-210.475 win against fourth-ranked Iowa in Iowa City tonight. The Sooners accumulated the highest team score for an NCAA men's team this season. OU gymnasts claimed the five individual event titles and the all-around.

OU was led by senior team captain Brendan O'Neil who claimed first on the floor exercise (9.60) and on the parallel bars (9.125). Daniel Furney placed first in the all-around with a 52.075 and finished second on the parallel bars (8.90). Ryan Hillyer (8.90) edged Gabe Hansen (8.85) for first on the horizontal bar while Brett Covey (9.50) and Steve Van Etten (9.25) won the still rings and vault, respectively. Iowa's Antonio Cesar claimed the top spot on the pommel horse, the only individual event not won by a Sooner.

"I'm pleased with our performance tonight," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "If our score stands with the scores that have been currently posted, it should be good enough to make us No. 1 next week. All of that is tempered by an injury to one of our top all-arounders, Gabe Hansen, who hurt his shoulder and had to drop out of his last event (parallel bars). We started strong. We finally had a great effort and score on the pommel horse and the momentum carried us through the meet. Next week will be an off-week for most of our guys, then we meet Michigan, who's currently ranked No. 1, in two weeks."

Selected OU gymnasts will travel to the Winter Cup on Feb. 9-10 in Las Vegas, Nev. The team will return to action on Feb. 18 when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to battle current No. 1 Michigan and Massachusetts. Competition begins at 1 p.m.
