Lady Golfers to Compete in Verizon "Mo"Morial
The Oklahoma women's golf team will continue its spring campaign in the GTE "Mo"Morial at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston, Texas, on March 5-6. The Sooner team will consist of Hope Edge, Allison Johnson, Wendy Martin, Lisa Meldrum and Jennifer Tannehill, with Betsy Berry competing as an individual.
The two-day tournament, which is hosted by Texas A&M, will consist of Mastercard's 11th-ranked Northwestern, No. 16 Ohio State and No. 25 Oklahoma among the 18-team field. There will also be eight teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation by Golf Week. The Sooners placed fourth last year at the par-71, 6,125-yard course with a score of 939.
Sooners Place Third at the
Midwest Classic
The Oklahoma lady golfers took third place at the Midwest Invitational held at the Hyatt Bear Creek Golf Course in Dallas, one Feb. 23-25. The Sooners carded rounds of 299, 309 and 316. Oklahoma State claimed the tournament championship with a score of 906. The Sooners, who are currently ranked 25th by Mastercard, battled the elements the first two days with rain delays each morning.
Sophomore Allison Johnson led the team with a 227, which was good for eighth place. Freshman Lisa Meldrum shot a 230 for 14th place, while junior Wendy Martin placed 30th with a 234. Junior Jennifer Tannehill carded a 236 while redshirt-freshman Hope Edge shot a 242.
Betsy Berry: Competing in her first tournament of the spring ... Competed in all but one of the Sooners' fall tournaments ... Top finish of seventh place came at the Alltell Husker Invitational.
Hope Edge: Carded a 242 last week at the Midwest Classic ... Made her collegiate debut at the Dick McGuire Invitational after redshirting.
Allison Johnson: Top Sooner (eighth place) at the Midwest Classic last week ... One of two Sooners to compete in all five tournaments last fall ... Led OU in two of the five tournaments.
Wendy Martin: Shot a 234 last week at the Midwest Classic ... Played in all but one fall tournament for the Sooners ... Finished in the top 20 of three of her four tournaments.
Lisa Meldrum: Placed 14th at the Midwest Classic with a score of 230 ... A true freshman who has competed in every tournament for the Sooners thus far ... Recorded a 74.8 scoring average to lead the team last fall.
Jennifer Tannehill: Carded a 236 last week to tie for 30th ... Fired a new low round of 70 at the UALR Invitational, where she finished a season best sixth ... Recorded a scoring average of 75.1, the second best on the team last fall.
"I am really excited about the Houston tournament. We have a really good chance of winning while still going head-to-head against a lot of regional teams. The girls were a little rusty at Dallas and the weather didn't really help much. We came off the last round really hard but the girls took good things away from the Midwest tournament. The greens at Pine Forest are really demanding and that should help because that is where we do well."
