A Closer Look

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's top-ranked men's gymnastics team dominated the No. 11 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 215.00-200.95, today in Norman, Okla. Sooner gymnasts swept first place in all six events and the all-around. OU topped 215 points for the third-straight competition.

The Sooner attack was led by senior All-American Steve Van Etten, who placed first in three events. He won the individual championships on the floor exercise (9.00), pommel horse (9.05) and horizontal bar (9.40). Sophomore Brett Covey captured first on the still rings for the third-consecutive competition, scoring a 9.50. Freshman David Iammatteo and Everette Bierker also posted event championship performances, winning the vault (9.05) and parallel bars (9.00), respectively. Sophomore Daniel Furney (52.25) won the all-around. OU competed without Gabe Hansen, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, and Jock Stevens.

"I was real pleased with the way we ended," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "We got on a roll midway through the competition and performed more to the level I expected. We were struck with some jitters and weren't quite are normal selves for the floor exercise and pommel horse. It was good to see us have one of our best high bar perfromances of the year. To finish with 215 points after two not so stellar events to begin the meet is very good."

OU returns to action this Friday, March 3, when it travels to Tempe, Ariz., to compete in the Southwest Cup. The field consists of OU, Arizona State and Penn State and will begin at 7 p.m., MST.
