A Closer Look
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The top-ranked Oklahoma men's gymnastics finished second to Michigan in a three-team meet in Ann Arbor, Mich, today. OU scored a season-high 215.750 to Michigan's 216.550. Massachusetts finished third with 202.350. Despite the loss, the Sooners should maintain their No. 1 ranking, based on scoring averages, when the newest poll is released. The loss was OU's first of the season and dropped the team to 6-1.
Two Sooners - freshman Jock Stevens and sophomore Brett Covey - placed first in individual events. Stevens won the floor exercise (9.55) and Covery tied for first on the still rings (9.65). Daniel Furney finished third in the all-around (53.05) and on still rings where he tied teammate Shannon Carrion (9.25). Furney finished second on vault (8.95). OU's other place winners were Steve Van Etten, who claimed second on the pommel horse (9.20) and third on the horizontal bar (9.05), and third-place finishers Brendan O'Neil (floor, 9.30) and Everette Bierker (vault, 9.10). The Sooners were without senior Gabe Hansen who has an injured shoulder.
"I thought we should have won today, even without Gabe Hansen," said OU Heach Coach Mark Williams. "I believe this team has enought talent to win. Even though you had your normal home-cooking from the judges, we should have been better prepared."
The Sooners return to action this Sunday, Feb. 25 when they host long-time rival Nebraska. The meet begins at 2 p.m. and will be held in conjunction with the women's gymnastics competition against Missouri.
