Furney Places 10th at Winter Cup

A Closer Look

NORMAN, Okla. - Sooner sophomore gymnast Daniel Furney placed 10th at the 2001 Winter Cup Challenge which was held Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas. Two-time Olympian and five-time national champion Blaine Wilson claimed the championship at the Winter Cup. Two other OU gymnasts, sophomore Shannon Carrion (18th) and freshman Jock Stevens (28th), competed in the final day of competition.

Furney finished two-tenths of a point behind Olympion Sean Townsend who placed ninth. He also posted one of the best performances on the floor exercise (8.50), placing sixth. Carrion earned two top-10 finishes. He placed 10th on the floor (8.35) and sixth on the still rings (8.95). Stevens earned the highest finish of any OU gymnast on an individual event, finishing fourth on the vault with a 9.05.

Furney, Carrion and Stevens will join the rest of the top-ranked Sooners when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face No. 2 Michigan and Massachusetts Sunday, Feb. 18. Action will begin at 1 p.m. EST.
