Norman, Okla. - Oklahoma tight end Trent Smith has been named a finalist for the Mackey Award, which is presented annually to the nation's best tight end. The winner will be announced Tuesday at a banquet hosted by the Nassau County (NY) Sports Commission.

Smith, a junior from Clinton, Okla., is one of three finalists. The other two are Colorado's Daniel Graham and Miami's Jeremy Shockey, both seniors.

Smith led the nation's tight ends with 61 receptions this season. That number also set a school record for receptions in a season at Oklahoma. In addition, he set school marks for receptions and touchdown receptions in a game with 11 and four, respectively, at Kansas.

Smith's 61 grabs went for 564 yards and six touchdowns.

Four Sooner players have now advanced to the finals or won some of college football's most prestigious awards this year. Late last week linebacker Rocky Calmus captured the Butkus Award (best linebacker) and strong safety Roy Williams won the Thorpe Award (best defensive back). Both are up for the Nagurski Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive player, which will be presented Monday night in Charlotte, NC.

Calmus also was a finalist for the Lombardi Award and punter Jeff Ferguson was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award.

Oklahoma has become the first school ever to win the Butkus and Thorpe Awards in the same season.
