Norman - Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is away from Norman on a recruiting trip, but released the following statement today regarding the hiring of OU assistant head coach offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Mark Mangino as the head coach at Kansas.
"We're very proud of Mark and the job he has done here for the last three years, especially in the last two when we were 23-2 with a national championship and conference title in one season and now a 10-2 record and a New Year's Day bowl the next. He's been very instrumental in our success. Our staff is happy for him and we believe he'll do an excellent job at Kansas. Mark's hiring is another strong compliment to this staff and what has been achieved at Oklahoma.
"I am sure Mark will want to get started on his new job and we certainly want to give him that opportunity. We'll manage just fine. Bubba Burcham and Jonathan Hayes will handle the offensive line as we prepare for the bowl game and Chuck Long will serve as our offensive coordinator for the bowl. Chuck also will get serious consideration for the position on a permanent basis. I am certain that there will be a great number of excellent offensive line coaches interested in this job. I'm aware of several and we will be interested in talking with them. I don't have a timetable. My immediate concern is the Cotton Bowl. I will hire a new coach as soon as I can do so comfortably and with the right amount of attention."
Mangino just completed his third year on the Oklahoma staff. He was assistant head coach, offensive line coach and run game coordinator in 1999 before moving to his current position in 2000. During his stay in Norman, the Sooners were 30-7 with three bowl appearances.
Last season, he was the recipient of the Frank Broyles Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top assistant coach.
