Jason White's brief comeback attempt is over. The Oklahoma quarterback who suffered a knee injury during the Sooners' game at Nebraska will undergo surgery, thus ending his playing time for the 2001 season.
"He looked pretty good throwing the ball and he's worked hard trying to get ready, but he just doesn't feel strong enough after doing what he needed to do to see if it was okay," said OU head coach Bob Stoops.
Surgery on the left knee will be performed next week.
White lost a preseason battle for the starting position, but after a strong relief outings against Texas and Kansas, earned the top spot prior to the Oct. 20 game against Baylor. He started the subsequent game at Nebraska, but was injured in the second quarter.
White completed 73-of-113 passes for 681 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions. He rushed 52 times for 164 yards and one touchdown.
Oklahoma, behind Nate Hybl, who has started seven games as OU's quarterback, takes on Texas A&M, Saturday, at 11 a.m., in Memorial Stadium.
