NORMAN, Okla. - After four matches on the road last week, Oklahoma returns home for a 7 p.m. match against Baylor on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Howard McCasland Field House. The Sooners return to the road on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Texas Tech. Match time with the Red Raiders is set for 7 p.m.
Baylor defeated the Sooners earlier this season, 3-0, in Waco, Texas. The Bears lead the all-time series with OU, 16-9. The Sooners last defeated BU, 3-2, on Nov. 27, 1998, in Norman.
Leading BU into Wednesday's match are sisters Stevie and Sunny Nicholas. Stevie leads the team with 462 kills (5.25 kpg), while Sunny holds a team-high .321 hitting percentage. Setter Dana Chuha dishes out 13.38 assists per game to lead the Bears. Defensively, Laura Daniela Lloreda has posted a team-best 299 digs (3.40 dpg), while Tisha Schwartz holds a team-high 90 blocks (1.02 bpg).
The Sooners travel to Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday for a rematch with the Red Raiders. Texas Tech took the first match of the season series, 3-0, in Norman. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series, 28-11, dating back to 1976. Oklahoma last defeated Texas Tech, 3-0, on Nov. 28, 1997 at Lubbock.
Texas Tech, coming off a 3-1 loss to No. 22 Colorado, is led by Melissa McGehee, who has posted a team-best 288 kills (3.35 kpg). Stacey Poole holds a team-high .277 hitting percentage, while Skydra Orzen is averaging 14.23 assists per game. Defensively for the Red Raiders, McGehee is tops in digs with 278 (3.23 dpg), and Angela Mooney holds a team-best 56 blocks (0.72 bpg).
Among the Big 12
Oklahoma and Jessica Barney remain strong at the service line, ranking seventh in the Big 12 with 1.46 service aces per game as a team, while Barney averages 0.41. In conference matches, Logan Pierce ranks 10th in kills, averaging 3.67 kpg.
Baylor ranks first in service aces (2.03 apg), second in kills (17.12 kpg) and third in assists (15.60 apg). Laura Daniela Lloreda and Stevie Nicholas rank first and second in service aces in the league with 0.52 and 0.51 sapg, respectively. Nicholas ranks first in kills, averaging 5.25 kpg, while Dana Chuha averages 13.38 assists per game to rank third in the league.
Texas Tech ranks third in digs (17.28 dpg), fourth in kills (16.88 kpg) and fourth in assists (15.56 apg). Kelly Johnson averages 3.69 kills per game to rank 10th in the league. Ann Romjue and Melissa McGehee rank sixth and 10th, respectively, in digs, averaging 3.42 and 3.23. Skydra Orzen tops the conference in assists, averaging 14.23.
Leading the Sooners
In three of four matches last week, sophomore Logan Pierce recorded double-doubles and posted a career-best 23 kills against Middle Tennessee State. She leads the team with 277 kills (3.18 kpg) and 291 digs (2.52 dpg). Freshman Candice Woods, who earned all-tournament honors at the Mary Jo Wynn Invitational last week, tops the team with a .203 hitting percentage, while junior Jessica Barney dishes out 9.47 assists per game.
Woods leads the team with 70 blocks (0.80 bpg), while Barney has posted a team-best 36 service aces (0.41 spag).
Winding Down
The Sooners have only seven matches remaining this season. After facing Baylor and Texas Tech this week, Oklahoma plays three ranked teams next week including No. 15 Texas A&M on Monday, Nov. 12, No. 2 Nebraska on Wednesday, Nov. 14 and No. 21 Colorado on Saturday, Nov. 17. The Sooners end the season with their last home match against Iowa State on Wednesday, Nov. 21, and their final match of the season at Texas on Saturday, Nov. 24.
Week in Review
The University of Oklahoma volleyball team was on the road for four matches last week. The Sooners dropped their first match at No. 14 Texas A&M, 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-23). Christina Barlow led OU with15 kills, while Logan Pierce posted 12 kills and a team-best .276 hitting percentage.
Oklahoma traveled to Springfield, Mo., on Saturday, Nov. 3, for the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at Southwest Missouri State. The Sooners lost to Middle Tennesse State, 3-1 (30-20, 30-21, 19-30, 30-24), on Saturday. Pierce posted a career-best 23 kills and led the team with a .271 hitting percentage.
Oklahoma played Wichita State on Sunday, losing 3-1 (30-15, 30-16, 23-30, 30-23). Pierce recorded a team-high 12 kills while Jessica Barney hustled for a team-best 16 digs. Pierce and Barney both recorded double-doubles in the four-game loss. The Sooners ended the tournament with a 3-0 loss (30-15, 30-21, 30-20) to tournament host, SMS. Barlow tied a career-best 15 kills to lead the team, while Candice Woods hit a team-best .235.
Double-Doubles
Logan Pierce leads the Sooners with eight double-doubles, her most recent a 12-kill, 11-dig effort against Wichita State last weekend at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at SMS. Jessica Barney trails Pierce with six double-doubles. Barney posted her sixth double-double against Wichita State, dishing out a team-high 33 assists and hustling for a team-best 16 digs.
At the Sam Houston State Tournament, Christina Barlow recorded four double-doubles in five matches. Griffin has recorded two double-doubles (Nebraska and Iowa State) while Lindsay Hoyt had one against KU (10 kills, 15 digs).
Head Coach Kalani Mahi
Second-year Head Coach Kalani Mahi is now 2-24 overall and 1-12 in conference play. Mahi and the Sooners snapped Kansas' perfect 10-0 start, best in program history, on Sept. 22 with a 3-1 victory in the Howard McCasland Field House.
Mahi coached freshman Candice Woods to all-tournament honors at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational in Springfield, Mo., last week. Earlier in the season,he coached junior Denise Griffin to all-tournament honors at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic and sophomore Logan Pierce to all-tournament honors at the Sam Houston State Tournament.
In his first year at OU, Mahi led the team to a 7-21 overall finish.
Howard McCasland Field House: Home of Sooner Volleyball
The University of Oklahoma Howard McCasland Field House, home of OU volleyball, is currently going through several renovations. As part of Greater Expectations: The Campaign for Sooner Sports, the newly renamed Howard McCasland Field House, previously the OU Field House, has already seen renovations in the volleyball locker rooms, team room and bathroom/shower area.
Work will also be done on the seating areas, lighting, sound system, restrooms, concession areas, ADA and life safety needs. The Field House will also be equipped with a heating and cooling system. Construction will be completed in phases as private funds become available. One million dollars has already been pledged by a private donor.
