NORMAN, Okla. - In its final home match of the 2001 season, the University of Oklahoma volleyball team (3-29, 2-17 Big 12) defeated Iowa State (4-21, 1-18 Big12) in four games via scores of 30-26, 32-30, 25-30 and 30-20, to finish 10th in the Big 12.

"I am just absolutely proud of the team coming back in the second game when we were down 22-27," said Oklahoma Head Volleyball Coach Kalani Mahi. "It just shows what we have been working on all year, and we finally got rewarded with a game and match win."

Several Sooners stepped up their games to contribute to the victory. Junior Denise Griffin led the team with 16 kills, while freshman Alexia McWhinney hustled for a team-best 18 digs. Three other Sooners fininshed with double digits in kills, including sophomore Logan Pierce (14), sophomore Christina Barlow (12) and freshman Candice Woods (10). Pierce and Griffin added 14 digs, while Barlow chipped in 10 for a team total of 70. Freshman Gretchen French added a team-high five blocks.

"Alexia McWhinney gave us an emotional momentum change when she came up with a couple of digs," said Mahi. "Denise Griffin was the opponents' emotional killer with her aggressive attacks."

The Cyclones were led by Mandi Harms and Brittany Dalager, who recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Defensively, Dalager came up with 18 digs while April Gerloff recorded 13. The Sooners out killed ISU 65-41, while the Cylclones outblocked OU 11 to eight.

"It feels good to win because I know the girls have been working hard," added Mahi. "If we play like we did tonight at Texas, we could end the season on a winning streak, and that would be great."

The Sooners play their final match of the 2001 season against Texas (15-12, 8-10 Big 12) on Saturday, Nov. 24. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Gregory Gym.
