Mike Stoops Named Finalist For AFCA Award

Norman, Okla. - Mike Stoops, Oklahoma's Associate Head Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator, is one of 18 finalists for the American Football Coaches Association's Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Mike, the brother of OU head coach Bob Stoops, has helped direct a defense that ranks No. 3 nationally overall, No. 6 in scoring defense (13.7), No. 7 in passing defense (156.3) and No. 15 in rushing defense (101.0). He has been on the Sooner staff for each of the last three seasons.

The only other Big 12 coaches on this year's AFCA list are David Fertsch of Baylor, John Lovett of Missouri and Ken Rucker of Texas A&M.

The award winner will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Last year, OU offensive coordinator Mark Mangino received the Frank Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach.
