Sooners On Cover Of Sports Illustrated

NORMAN, Okla. - Last week was a big one in the sports world. Barry Bonds smacked a record-breaking home run and legends Cal Ripken, Jr., and Tony Gwynn played their final major league games.

As major as those events were, they were trumped by the Oklahoma Sooners who for the 18th time overall and the fourth time during the three-year Bob Stoops era, are being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The issue, entitled "Take That, Texas!," features a cover photo of OU's Jimmy Wilkerson tackling Texas quarterback Chris Simms. A four-page article inside the issue, entitled "Boomer Sooner," takes a look at the OU-Texas game with a special focus on Sooner safety Roy Williams. The story was written by Austin Murphy.

Inside photos show Williams' hit on Simms that forced a late-game interception, Quentin Griffin's first-half touchdown scamper and back-up quarterback Jason White being tackled at the end of one of his several runs.

The Oct. 15 issue will hit newsstands later this week.
