NORMAN, Okla. - The Red River volleyball rivalry is set for Wednesday, Oct. 3, as Oklahoma (2-11, 1-2 Big 12) welcomes Texas (8-3, 3-1 Big 12) to the Howard McCasland Field House for a 7 p.m. match.
In the 26-year series history, the Sooners have never defeated the Longhorns. UT leads 18-0 with OU's closest match in 1996 when the Sooners took Texas to five games.
Oklahoma picked up its first Big 12 win this season against Kansas on Sept.22, breaking KU's 10-match winning streak. The Sooners' last league action was against Missouri on Saturday, with the Tigers taking the match 3-1. Leading the OU offense is sophomore Logan Pierce with 118 kills (2.81 kpg) on the season after a career-high 15 kills in the match against Missouri. Freshman Candice Woods leads the team in hitting efficiency at .281 after producing a career-best .476 against the Tigers.
The Longhorns are coming off a 3-2 loss to Kansas State, who was ranked No. 25 in this week's USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll, while Texas, ranked 23rd last week, fell out of the rankings. UT is led by Mira Topic and Bethany Howden with 163 and 160 kills, respectively. Howden holds a team-high .312 hitting percentage while leading the team in blocks with 53 (1.39 bpg). Topic is also the digs leader with 154 (4.05 dpg).
Oklahoma's next match is against No. 2 Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., at the Nebraska Coliseum, on Saturday, Oct. 6. Match time is set for 1 p.m. The Huskers dropped from the No. 1 spot in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll for the first time this season. Long Beach State, NU's only loss this season, took their spot at No. 1.
