NORMAN, Okla. - The third-ranked Oklahoma men'sgymnastics team won its first dual meet of the season, dominating Air Force, 213.60-199.15, at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Norman. Sooner gymnasts swept the top-three places in all six individual events and claimed first in the all-around.
OU was paced by senior Gabe Hansen, who won the all-around (52.30) and the horizontal bar (9.10). He also placed third on the floor exercise (8.95) and the parallel bars (8.55). Senior All-American Brendan O'Neil easily outdistanced the competition to win the floor exercise (9.40) as did All-American Josh Landis on the pommel horse (9.10). Three other Sooners also claimed first-place honors: Shannon Carrion (still rings, 9.30), Heath Mueller (vault, 9.05) and Daniel Furney (parallel bars, 9.10). Several other Oklahoma gymnasts finished in the top three, including Landis (second, floor exercise), Steve Van Etten (second, pommel horse, second, vault, second, horizontal bar), Furney (third, pommel horse, third, horizontal ), David Johnston (tied for second, still rings), Brett Covey (tied for second, still rings), John Payton (third, vault) and O'Neil (second, parallel bars).
Oklahoma returns to action this Sunday, February 3, when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa, to face the Iowa Hawkeyes at 7 p.m.
