Women's Team Wins California Meet

A Closer Look

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of Oklahoma women's gymastics team avenged its only loss of the season (to California) by winning a quadrangular meet Sunday at Berkeley, Calif. The No. 13 Sooners (6-1) finished with a score of 195.300, a new high this year, and beat host California (195.175), Utah State (194.450) and Arizona (193.350).

OU received another stellar performance from sophomore Leticia Ishii, who won the all-around (39.400) as well as the uneven parallel bars (9.900). It was Ishii's second all-around title in three meets so far this season. Her first-place finish on the bars was her third in as many outings.

Sophomore Leah Mueller continued to be impressive, especially on the vault, where she landed in a thee-way tie for first with a score of 9.825. Like Ishii on the bars, Mueller won the vault for the third time in as many tries. She finished second on the team and fourth overall in the all-around (39.150)

The floor exercise was a stong event for the Sooners. Sophomore Patricia Aoki tied for first (9.900) for the second consecutive meet while Ishii and junior Mariana Goncalves finished in a three-way tie for third with a 9.875.

Oklahoma travels to Denton, Texas, for the second time this season as the Sooners face Texas Woman's University next Saturday at 7 p.m. The Sooners defeated TWU, 194.025-189.300, on Jan. 12 in their season opener.
