OU Men Take First Place At The Rocky Mountain Open

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, ranked No. 3 in the national preseason poll, got its 2001 season off to a tremendous start at the Rocky Mountain Open Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo. Oklahoma won the Open in convincing fashion with a score of 209.750. Oklahoma was followed by Nebraska (200.050), host Air Force (194.100) and Arizona State (189.100) in the team standings.

The Sooners were completely unmatched, sweeping both team and individual events. "From our performance this weekend, it looked as though we were in a different league," said Oklahoma Head Coach Mark Williams.

Individually, the Sooners showed balance with a different gymnast winning each event. Sophomore Brett Covey (rings), sophomore Daniel Furney (parallel bars), senior Brendan O'Neil (floor exercise), freshman Jock Stevens (vault), sophomore Josh Landis (pommel horse) and senior Steve Van Etten (horizontal bar) all took home individual titles for Oklahoma.

"This shows that we can be competitive with some of the best teams in the country," said Williams.

OU competes next Saturday at home against Air Force at 7 p.m. The meet will take place at Bart Conner's Gymnastics Academy in Norman, located north of Robinson Street on Interstate Drive.
