NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team has been ranked 14th nationally by Athlon Sports Magazine, Basketball News Report, and Lindy's Poll. In addition, junior guard LaNeishea Caufield (Ada,Okla.) has been named a preseason third team All-American by the Women's Basketball News Service. In the NCAA Tournament, Caufield averaged a team-high 23.7 points, 2.0 steals and shot 60.5 percent from the field. In all games, she ranked second on the team in scoring with 15.3 points.
A year ago, Oklahoma shocked everyone by tying for the Big 12 Conference regular season title (13-3), upending defending national champion Purdue on its home court in the second round of the NCAA Tounament and winning a school record 25 games (25-8).
Joining Caufield returning as returnees are junior point guard Stacey Dales (Brockville, Ontario, Canada), senior guard Sunny Hardeman (Norman, Okla.) and sophomore forward Caton Hill (Ada,Okla.). OU has 73.7 percent of its scoring back and 79.6 percent of its rebounding from a year ago. The Sooners also welcome back junior center Jen Cunningham (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and sophomore guard Jadrea Seeley (Bethel, Okla.), who each played well in postseason last year. Head Coach Sherri Coale added three newcomers to the roster in freshman Stephanie Luce (Gransbury, Texas), a Texas All-State selection, and juniors Jamie Talbert (Elkhart, Kan.) and Rosalind Ross (Milwaukee, Wis.), two junior college first team All-Americans.
Oklahoma has its toughest schedule yet under Coale as the Sooners will play 14 teams that saw postseason action a year ago, including five that advanced to at least the NCAA Sweet 16. Also, 10 of OU's opponents finished within the top two in their respective conferences.
The Sooners open the 2000-2001 regular season at the Bertha Teague Classis in Tulsa (Nov. 17-18), followed by the elite Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge in Madison, Wis. (Nov. 22-24). OU will host a pair of exhibition games on Nov. 6 against Oklahoma Christian and Nov. 10 vs. Australia Institute. Both games start at 7 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center.
