Women's Golf Team Travels To Albuquerque This Weekend

Sooners to Compete at Comcast-Dick McGuire Invitational
The University of Oklahoma women's golf team travels to Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 21-23 for the Dick McGuire Invitational at UNM Championship Golf Course.

Competing for the Sooners will be Betsy Berry, Hope Edge, Jennifer James, Wendy Martin and Lisa Meldrum. Also competing as an individual will be Allison Johnson.

The par-73 UNM Championship Course is on a 6,069-yard layout. The 54-hole tournament will be played with 18 holes on each of the three days. Competition Thursday and Friday will begin at 8:30 a.m. while Saturday's round will start at 8 a.m.

"This is going to be really exciting because it will mark the first time that Hope Edge is in the line-up," noted OU Head Coach Carol Ludvigson. "Everybody is really excited about playing on this golf course because it is really challenging. It is more conducive to our game because we have some really good hitters and this is a longer course. We are planning to keep with our goal of a top-three finish."

The 18-team field will consist of seven Mastercard preseason top-20 teams. Four other Big 12 teams competing are Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Oklahoma Places Third at Husker Invitational
OU finished third at the Alltell Husker Invitational at Yankee Hill Country Club in Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 11-12. The Sooners concluded play among a field of 17 teams to finish 53 strokes over par.

Jennifer James led the Sooners by firing a 226 for third place. Betsy Berry shot a 226 for seventh, while Allison Johnson and Wendy Martin claimed 28th and 37th, respectively. Lisa Meldrum was disqualified for a second-round score card error.

"I felt like this was a really good start to the season. There is always room for improvement and we are looking forward to the opportunity in Albuquerque" said OU Head Coach Carol Ludvigson.

The Oklahoma Lineup

Betsy Berry:Tied for seventh at the Husker Invitational last week, firing a 227 ... Carded her low score (226) of last season at the NCAA Regionals ... Recorded a season scoring average of 79.6 ... Led after the opening day of the Big 12 Championships.

Hope Edge: Is playing in her first collegiate tournament ... Redshirted her freshman year ... Finished her high school career by winning the 1999 state title ... Took runner-up honors in the state during her junior season.

Jennifer James: Led the team with a third-place finish (226) at last week's Husker Invitational ... Finished in second place at last year's Big 12 Championships where she shot her low round (72) of the season ... Produced the second-best scoring average (77.6) on the squad last season.

Allison Johnson: Finished 28th with a 235 at the Husker Invitational last week ... Played in all but one of the Sooners' regular season outings a year ago ... Placed second at the Mountain View Collegiate ... Posted lowest one-round score (69) on the team ... Compiled a scoring average of 78.0 last year.

Wendy Martin: Carded a 239 for 37th at the Husker Invitational a week ago ... Fired her lowest score (227) of last season at the Big 12 Championships ... Posted low rounds (71) at both the Dick McGuire and Roadrunner Invitationals ... Recorded the best stroke average (76.7) on the team last year.

Lisa Meldrum: Fired a team-low score (72) in the first round of the Husker Invitational ... Three-time Quebec Junior Champion (97, 98, 99) ... 2000 Quebec Amateur Champion ... 2000 Canadian Junior Champion ... 2000 Quebec Junior Match Play Champion.
