Stoops' Contract Modified

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma Board of Regents today modified the contract of Head Football Coach Bob Stoops. The modifications included extending the contract to Dec. 31, 2005, providing deferred compensation benefits in the annual amount of $150,000, contingent upon remaining head coach through Dec. 31, 2004, increasing additional and outside compensation from non-state appropriated funds by an estimated $80,000 to an estimated $530,000 annually, and increasing performance-based incentive bonuses including a national championship bonus and other performance bonuses by an estimated $70,000 to a maximum annual amount of $200,000. The value of his total annual compensation, if all performance bonuses are realized, is between $900,000 and $1 million.

"I want to express appreciation to the entire administration from President Boren to Joe Castiglione to the OU Board of Regents for their willingness to show support for me and the entire coaching staff," Stoops said. "I appreciate their efforts to maintain continuity and demonstrate their support for the direction of our program and the goals we have set."

The Regents also voted to authorize the President and the Athletic Director, with the assistance of the General Counsel, to execute a contract including such terms.

"I want the University to send the strongest possible signal of our support to Coach Bob Stoops," said OU President David L. Boren. "There is no one in the country better suited to be the head coach at the University of Oklahoma than Bob Stoops. He has excelled both as a coach and as a role model for our student-athletes."

"The commitment of Bob, his wife, Carol, and his staff to our student-athletes, programs, University and community have led the way to the rejuvenated excitement in Oklahoma football. We wanted to clearly express our commitment to Bob and his leadership of our program into the future."
