NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior point guard Stacey Dales is a confirmed member of the Canadian National women's basketball team that will compete in Sydney at the 2000 Olympic Games next month.

Prior to the games, the Canadian National Team will participate in a three-game series with the USA National Team in Texas and California on August 22, 23 and 26. On August 23, the two national teams will face each other at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas, at 7:30 p.m. For group discounted ticket prices, please call Tara DeGiusti with the OU women's basketball office at 405-325-8322. Individual ticket prices range from $5 to $40.

Dales is the youngest member of the Canadian National Team and is the only active Big 12 Conference women's basketball player competing in the Olympic Games.

"We are so proud of Stacey!" said OU Head Coach Sherri Coale. "Her participation with the Canadian National Team is incredibly important both for our team and for Stacey's development. The experience that Stacey will gain through international competition will prove invaluable in her final two seasons here at Oklahoma. We depend upon her leadership as well as her physical skill, and her experience through this summer march to Sydney will undoubtedly make us a better basketball team. We would love to give her an Oklahoma welcome in Dallas on August 23. I hope to see a Crimson and Cream section there! The University of Oklahoma is ultimately the beneficiary of Stacey Dales' competition in the 2000 Olympics."

Dales, a 2000 All-Big 12 second teamer, established a conference record for most career assists per game, dishing out 5.5 assists per contest. The two-year letterwinner and starter for OU averages 12.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.7 steals in 32.1 minutes of play. Dales also has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 team, sporting a grade point average of better than 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale).

This past summer, the Brockville, Ontario, native became the first athlete in the 40-year history of Thousand Islands Secondary School to have her number retired. Her No. 21 basketball jersey will be placed in the school's trophy case, never to be worn again.

Dales has been training with the Canadian National Team since May, 2000, and has participated in three-games series with Cuba in Hamilton, Montreal and Toronto. In the last game against Cuba in Montreal, Dales was named the Player of the Game, scoring eight points. In the three-game series with Cuba, she shot 33.3 percent from the field, had 14 points, five rebounds, five assists and only one turnover while playing 15 minutes per game.

The first match-up between the two national teams will take place in San Antonio, Texas, on August 22, followed by an espn2 showdown at 8 p.m. local time on August 26, in Oakland, Calif.
