SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS --- Oklahoma's Stacey Dales had three points, four rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes of action as a member of the Canadian Women's Basketball National team that kicked off its pre-Olympic exhibition tour against the USA National team last night. Team USA handed Canada an 81-40 loss at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas, in front of 8,015 fans on Tuesday night. The matchup between the U.S. and Canada was the first of three exhibition contests between the two teams, with the remaining games being played on Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Dallas' Reunion Arena and on Aug. 26 at The Arena in Oakland in Oakland, Calif., at 8 p.m. PST.

Dales hit her only three-pointer attempted, dished out one assist and had one blocked shot as a starting point guard for Canada. Canada, which earned the bronze medal at the Los Angeles games with the help of now head coach Bev Smith, secured its 2000 Olympic berth with a third-place finish at the Americas Olympic qualifier. In the summer of 1999, Canada collected the silver medal at the Pan American Games.

Powered by six players scoring in double figures, including 16 points and 11 rebounds by Yolanda Griffith, the U.S. took the lead three minutes into the game and never looked back. The United States started the second half where it left off in the first, limiting the Canadians' to three points in the half's first 10:00 to take a 61-29 advantage. During that time, the United States forced its neighbors to the north into six turnovers and 10 missed shots. The U.S. continued to pulverize Canada on both ends of the floor and rolled to the eventual 81-40 victory.

Joining Griffith in the double figures column were Ruthie Bolton-Holifield, Smith, Natalie Williams and Kara Wolters all of whom connected for 11 points. Additionally, Chamique Holdsclaw tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds.

As a team, the U.S. shot 52.6 percent from the floor, 41.7 percent from three-point range and outrebounded the Canadians 36-25. On the defensive end, the U.S. held Canada to a frigid 30.2 percent of its shots from the field, including 15.4 percent from three-point and forced 23 Canadian turnovers.

The U.S. and Canada teams will travel to Dallas for the second in a three-game series. The teams will face each other in Dallas at Reunion Arena at 7:30 p.m. tonight while the final of the three games will be contested on Aug. 26 at The Arena In Oakland in Oakland, Calif.

The 2000 Sydney Olympics are being held Sept. 15-Oct. 1, with women's basketball being conducted Sept. 16-30.
