NORMAN, Okla. - The 19th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners completed their first practice in full pads by conducting a short scrimmage at the intramural fields just a few blocks from Memorial Stadium Monday morning. OU ran roughly 40 plays during the scrimmage that was highlighted by a 77-yard touchdown pass from Josh Heupel to Antwone Savage.
"We decided late last night to move our scrimmage to this morning because of the heat, but more so because we thought our guys would be fresher after having yesterday off," noted OU Head Coach Bob Stoops. "The scrimmage was good, but we still have a long way to go. There were too many breakdowns on offense and defense. The offense had breakdowns that resulted in three turnovers and the defense had a breakdown that resulted in a long touchdown. Those things must be addressed and corrected."
Senior quarterback Josh Heupel completed 7-of-12 passes for 132 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The only other Sooner quarterback to attempt a pass was sophomore Nate Hybl, who was 4-of-10 for 18 yards and one interception.
OU's running attack, a point of emphasis this season, found success often with sophomore Quentin Griffin (six carries for 35 yards) and freshman Renaldo Works (six carries for 13 yards). Most of Works' runs came in short yardage situations and resulted in four straight first downs.
Oklahoma will continue its two-a-day practices at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. until Friday. On Saturday, OU will hold its annual Fan Appreciation Day at Memorial Stadium. Fans will be allowed to obtain autographs of coaches and players from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the Sooners will hold their final public scrimmage. Admission is free.
