NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, two-time defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champions, has released its 2001 season schedule. The Sooners will face last season's top-three finishers from the NCAA championships and host three home contests, announced OU Head Coach Mark Williams.
The Sooners begin their season at the Rocky Mountain Open, Jan. 19-20, in Colorado Springs, Colo. OU's three home contests will be against Air Force (Jan. 27), Nebraska (Feb. 25) and Ohio State (March 9). Road competitions are highlighted with meetings against Iowa (Feb. 23), which finished third in 2000, Michigan (Feb. 18), last year's NCAA runner-up, and defending national champion Penn State (March 3). OU travels to the MPSF championships March 23-24 in Berkeley, Calif., and the NCAA championships will be held in Columbus, Ohio, April 5-7.
"We put together a schedule that will challenge us right through the NCAA Championships," said Williams. "We face defending national champion Penn State, NCAA runner-up and 1999 national champion Michigan, and Iowa, last year's third-place team. We also face Nebraska twice, which is always a good team and big rivalry for us, and Ohio State, which qualified for the NCAA team finals. We face every team that qualified for the NCAA finals. With this schedule, we will be able to find out how we compare with the best teams in the country and will have established ourselves as national championship contenders."
Last season OU placed fourth at the NCAA championships and captured its second-straight MPSF Championship as Williams earned MPSF Coach-of-the-Year honors. Four Sooners earned All-America honors, including Brendan O'Neil, Josh Landis, David Johnston and Steve Van Etten.
