NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma shortstop Tommy Whiteman and second baseman Zach Lekse were selected in the sixth and 24th round, respectively, of the 2000 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, held June 5-7. As a draft-eligible sophomore, Whiteman was the 187th overall selection and the 27th pick of the round by the Houston Astros. Whiteman is not obligated to sign a professional contract and may still return to complete his college eligibility with the Sooners. Lekse, a senior from Martinez, Calif., was the 717th selection overall and the 17th pick of the round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Whiteman racked up second team All-Big 12 accolades after leading the team in hitting with a .360 average and stolen bases with 21. This year's selection marks the second time that Whiteman has been drafted as the sophomore was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the sixth round of the 1998 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft before deciding to attend OU. Lekse earned honorable mention All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Tournament team honors this season after batting .320 with 10 doubles and 31 RBIs.
All-American Jeff Bajenaru recently signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox, who selected him in the 36th round of the 1999 draft, prior to this year's First-Year Player Draft.
