NORMAN, Okla. - Mark Williams, head men's gymnastics coach at the University of Oklahoma, announced today the signing of John Goodwin, a two-time junior national champion, to compete for the Sooners next season.
Goodwin hails from Norman, Okla., and has competed at Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy under Williams since 1995. Goodwin was runner-up on the horizontal bar at this year's Junior National Championships after winning the event the two previous seasons. He finished eighth in the all-around at this year's Junior National Championships and joins fellow OU signees and Bart Conner members Heath Mueller (ninth) and Jacque Stevens (second), who also placed in the top 10.
"It's pretty exciting," said Williams. "We've signed three gymnasts who finished in the top 10 at the Junior National Championships. That probably hasn't happened in the past 10 years, three top 10 gymnasts signning with the same program. They all competed for me at Bart Connner, so they know what to expect when they get here and I know what they are capable of achieving."
OU also signed Brian Trause from Scotch Plains, N.J. Trause was coached by Jim Surgent at Surgent's Elite and was a qualifier to the Junior National Championships.
