Norman, Okla. - Oklahoma Head Volleyball Coach Kalani Mahi has signed four players to national letters of intent to play for the Sooners in the fall. Mahi has added Christina Barlow of Choctaw, Alexia McWhinney of Katy, Texas, Karli Maughan of Aurora, Colo., and Logan Pierce of Durango, Colo., to Oklahoma's volleyball roster.
"We're very excited about bringing in four very talented athletes as well as volleyball players," said Mahi. "We expect them to add a lot of athleticism and experience to a solid returning corps. Two or three of the recruits have the ability to make an impact right away. There are some open positions available and we expect them to compete well and hard for a starting spot. Not only are they very athletic, all four players are very sound academically, which is always a plus for any program. They are very well rounded student-athletes."
Barlow, a native Oklahoman, was a three-time all-conference and two-time All-State selection while in high school. The 5-10 outside hitter also guided her high school team to two state titles and one runner-up finish. This past year, Barlow was voted co-Player-of-the-Year. In addition she was given the Individual Intensity Award as a senior and in 1997-98. She was also selected to the all-city first team as a junior. Barlow has been named to several all-tournament teams during her prep career and for the past two years, she has been an All-American Scholar nominee. While playing club volleyball with the Oklahoma Wind, she registered two regional titles (1998, 1999) and a runner-up finish (2000).
McWhinney joins the Oklahoma volleyball program after becoming Cypress Springs High School's all-time kill and block solo record holder. The 5-10 Texan is a three-time team MVP and was voted to the all-district first team her senior season. During her final prep campaign, she registered 137 kills, 130 digs and 36 solo blocks while playing the middle blocker and outside hitting positions. She was a National Achievement Scholar this year.
Maughan, a 5-11 outside hitter, leaves Eaglecrest High School as the school's record holder for most digs (32) and kills (21) in a single match. She averaged 4.37 kills and digs plus 1.73 blocks per game as a senior. This past season, she was named to the All-State first team and voted team MVP.
Pierce is a 5-11 outside hitter who became the state of Colorado's first female to ever be named to three consecutive All-State first teams (1997-2000). In addition to being a three-time All-State selection, she was voted to the all-conference teams twice. Pierce guided her Durango High School program to the league, region and state titles this past year.
