OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Nebraska set up a rematch of the 1999 Big 12 Phillips 66 baseball tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Huskers downed Oklahoma 6-1 Saturday in an elimination game in the fourth annual meet.
Advancing to 46-15 on the season, Nebraska nailed down three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning after Matt Hopper blasted his season-team-best 19th home run. Teammate second baseman Will Bolt also had a pair of hits and drove in two runs while Huskers' rightfielder Adam Shabala set a Big 12 tourney record with two triples. Shabala also drove in a pair of runs.
Oklahoma, hosting a NCAA Regional on May 26-28 in this stadium, fell 39-21 after making the Big 12 Phillips 66 tourney semifinals for the third time in four years. Mike Bradbury was tagged with the loss for the Sooners as he fell to 3-2 in abbreviated mound action this year. Second baseman Zach Lekse continued his hot hitting at Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark with a 3-for-4 afternoon.
Oklahoma lost four of the five meeting between the two teams this year.
The Huskers edged Baylor, 4-3, in 1999 for the school's first postseason or regular season conference crown since 1950 in the old Big Six Conference. Baylor was awarded the 2000 Big 12 title after finishing the year 23-7 in league play.
As many as five to six Big 12 teams are expected to advance to more postseason play in NCAA Regionals during Monday's 2 p.m. (CDT) national announcement on ESPN. Baylor and Oklahoma already are slotted into two of the 64 positions as host teams.
