NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's Jeff Bajenaru was named to the USA Today Baseball Weekly 2000 All-America Team as a second team utility player selection, as announced by the national publication yesterday. On the year, Bajenaru has acted as the team's starting rightfielder as well as the team's premier closer. The senior from Chino Hills, Calif., currently ranks second in the nation in saves with 19, while also posting a .360 batting average with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs at the plate.
With his 19th save against Oklahoma State in the first round of the Phillips 66/Big 12 Baseball Tournament on Wednesday, Bajenaru broke the conference's single-season saves record while lifting the Sooners to a 9-8 victory over the Cowboys. Bajenaru, OU's career and single-season saves record holder, also moved into sole possession of second place on the school's single-season appearances list with his 33 appearance yesterday on the mound.
Bajenaru racked up several other honors this week as the Austin American Statesman named him to its All-Big 12 team as the first team relief pitcher on Sunday, while The Dallas Morning News also selected him to its first team All-Big 12 Team as a utility player on Wednesday.
