Women's Golf Returns To Norman To Host Only Home Tournament Of The Year

NORMAN, Okla. - After traveling for two months of the spring season the University of Oklahoma women's golf team will return home to host the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Monday and Tuesday at the Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Course in Norman. For the past two tournaments the Sooners have claimed both the individual and team titles. Sophomore Wendy Martin fired a 219 a season ago, while senior Isabelle Blais finished atop the leader board in 1997 with a 224.

"This will give us an opportunity to play in front of a home crowd," said head coach Carol Ludvigson. "There will be a little pressure, but we will also be relaxed because this is our course and we've played it in every weather condition imaginable. We are looking forward to the chance to entertain our family and friends and know they will give us a lot of support."

The Sooners, who are currently ranked 31st in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, are joined by a field which includes Kansas State, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Baylor, Oral Roberts, Denver, Colorado State, Wichita State, Lamar, Kansas, UTEP and Colorado.

"It's going to be competitive and will also give us a preview for our regional," stated Ludvigson. "It will be nip and tuck, but we're looking forward to low scores. The girls are working on their own game and if they take care of their own games the team title will come with that. I feel this will give us momentum to carry into the conference championship as six Big 12 teams will be here."

The tournament format calls for 36 holes on the opening day and 18 on the second. A shotgun start will get things underway at 8 a.m. on Monday, and tee times will begin off holes #1 and #10 at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
