Sooner Betsy Berry Tied For First After Opening Round

LUBBOCK, Texas -- At the conclusion of the opening round of the 2000 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship at the Lubbock, Texas Country Club the University of Oklahoma women's golf team is in third place with 298 strokes. OU's total is five strokes behind Texas who leads the tournament with a five-over-par, 293. The Sooners led the field in birdies with 12 and eagles with sophomore Betsy Berry firing the only eagle of the day on the par four third hole, a hole no one shot a birdie on. Berry also is tied with two others in the individual competition after she opened the day by going out with a 31, the best front nine of any athlete today, and coming in with a 39. The two scores combined to give Berry a 70 (-2), which is nine strokes better than her previous career best single round score.
Others contributing to Oklahoma's effort include sophomore Jennifer James who is tied for seventh with a 73 (+1). The score ties her season best, which came at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic earlier this month. James also led the team in birdies with four, the second best total of any athlete in the field. Sophomore Wendy Martin is tied for 15th with a 76 (+4), while senior Jaime Dello-Russo is tied for 29th at 79 (+7). Rounding out the list of OU's scorers was Jennifer Tannehill who is tied for 50th with a 83 (+11)
Action resumes tomorrow with 18 holes as the tournament ending on Sunday with the final round. As a team OU finished fifth last year with a 920, while Martin tied for second with a 219.
