TULSA, Okla. - The Oklahoma Sooner baseball team battled the Oklahoma State Cowboys to a 5-3 win Friday night in game one of the Bedlam series in front of 11,196 fans at Driller's Stadium in Tulsa. OU shortstop Tommy Whiteman and first baseman Rick Park belted back-to-back home runs in the third inning to help the Sooners grab an early 3-0 lead. After the Cowboys (27-15, 9-10 Big 12) tied the game at three in the sixth inning, Oklahoma (29-15, 12-7 Big 12) added two more runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. Jeff Bajenaru pitched the final 1.1 innings, in relief of starter Evan Greusel (3-0), to close out the game and rack up his 13th save on the season.
Leftfielder Sean Murphy went 2-for-2 at the plate, while catcher Eliot Joyner added a timely triple to drive in the tie-breaking run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Greusel held the Cowboys to only seven hits over 7.2 innings pitched while striking out a career-high nine batters.
OSU rightfielder Jimbo McAuliff paced the Cowboys offensively with a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored and one RBI. Cowboy starter Josh Merrigan (7-2) suffered the loss.
The two teams meet in game two of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
