NORMAN, Okla. - With partly cloudy skies and winds out of the north at 15-20 mph, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team was joined by 12 other institutions as the Susie Maxwell Berning got underway at the OU/Jimmie Austin Golf Course, in Norman. Following the first day of competition, which consisted of 36 holes, the Sooners stand in second place behind Nebraska (624, +48) with a 637 (+61). OU led after the first 18 holes, finishing with an opening round 319, but the Cornhuskers took control during the afternoon round with a 302.
"I feel like we should be playing a lot better on this course, but it played difficult today," said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. "We need to make sure to cut out our mental mistakes and stroke the ball a little better because we were tentative. We were trying to press and on a day like today you want to be patient."
Wendy Martin, Betsy Berry and Jennifer Tannehill all ended the day tied for eighth at 158 (+14). Both Martin and Berry posted matching rounds of 79, while Tannehill strung together rounds of 82 and 76. Jennifer James and Jaime Dello-Russo finished one stroke off of the trio of Sooners ahead of them by shooting 159 (+15). James opened with an 82 and ended with a 77, while Dello-Russo coupled rounds of 80 and 79 together. Competing as an individual, Isabelle Blais finished in a tie for 19th by posting rounds of 83-77 (160, +16). Johnson not only had success on par threes, but also collect five birdies to tie for 22nd with rounds of 78-83. Kellie Jamison shot back-to-back 83s (166, +22), and stands in a three-way tie for 39th. Marsha Gonzaga closed out the list of Sooner competitors as she finished 62nd with rounds of 88 and 83 (171, +27).
"We won't be as tight tomorrow, we will be a little more relaxed," stated Ludvigson "We know what we did today didn't work. We should be able to focus a little better tomorrow. We've played better when we are behind all season."
OU will look to make up the Cornhuskers' 13-stroke advantage as the classic continues tomorrow with tee times set for 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th holes.
