NORMAN, Okla. - Despite a constant heavy rain, the Oklahoma Sooners held their first spring scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium.

"I thought our guys did a great job of working through the elements today," said OU head coach Bob Stoops. "It was really tough going out there but we need to know how to overcome days like this. I thought overall we did a very good job, but there are still areas that we need to improve on and we plan to hit those areas next week in practice."

Of the 100 plays ran this afternoon, the Sooners passed roughly 60 times. The offense was led by senior quarterback Josh Heupel, who completed 19 of 31 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown. At one point in the scrimmage, Heupel had consecutive completion streaks of seven and five.

"That was really tough out there," noted Heupel following the scrimmage. "It was really wet and windy, but what made it harder was going against our number one defense. Everyone is talking about our offense, but our defense has really improved and is more confident than last year. Going against them everyday, will make us a better offense."

Oklahoma will continue practice next week with drills scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (weather permitting). The weekday practices are slated to begin at 4 p.m. and are open to the public. The Saturday practice will be a scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium and will begin at approximately 10 a.m.
