NORMAN, Okla. - Junior pitcher Austin Coose struck out a career-high nine batters and held Kansas State to only six hits as Oklahoma defeated the Wildcats, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at the L. Dale Mitchell Park. Coose picked up his third win and Jeff Bajenaru collected his fourth save on the season as the Sooners improve to 2-0 in the Big 12 and 9-5 overall. KSU falls to 3-9 on the year and 0-5 in the conference.
Offensively, first baseman Rick Park scored two runs for OU as the senior co-captain belted his fourth home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth and scored a second run on a RBI single by Bajenaru in the bottom of the second. Bajenaru finished the day going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and a RBI, while second baseman Zach Lekse went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Coose produced a strong pitching performance throughout the day as the righthander squelched potential scoring threats by KSU in four of the 7.2 innings he worked.
Starting pitcher Jason Wells (0-3) suffered the loss for KSU after going the distance and giving up all four runs. Second baseman Chad Tabor collected two hits to pace the Wildcats offensively.
The two teams conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
