IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team tallied 230.850 points to finish fourth at the NCAA Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, tonight. Penn State (231.975) claimed the national championship, followed by Michigan (231.850) and Iowa (231.525). California (230.825) and Ohio State (230.800) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Five OU gymnasts qualified for the individual event finals
The Sooners began the championships on the floor exercise, an event in which they were ranked first nationally, but posted a 38.275 and was in fifth place at the end of the first rotation. OU faired better on the pommel horse, tallying a school-record 39.05, including career highs by David Johnston (9.50) and Josh Landis, to move into second place. Landis' score of 9.95 tied the Sooner record on the event. On the still rings, the Sooners scored a 38.15, led by Ed Wentzheimer's 9.55, a season high, and David Johnston's 9.825. OU struggled on the vault (37.825), but recorded a season high on the parallel bars (38.725), including a career best by Brendan O'Neil (9.85) and a season high by Gabe Hansen (9.625) to stand in fifth place at the end of five rotations. OU scored a 38.825 on the horizontal bar and moved into fourth place. Everette Bierker recorded a career high (9.70) and Steve Van Etten posted a season best (9.775).
Individually, five Sooners advanced to the individual event finals. Landis' 9.95 was tied for the best qualifying mark on the pommel horse. O'Neil advanced in two events: floor exercise (9.875) and parallel bars. Johnston (still rings) and Van Etten (horizontal bar) also qualified for the individual finals.
The individual event finals begin tomorrow at 2 p.m.
