Men's Gymnasts Advance To National Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Oklahoma second-ranked men's gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships by placing second in the NCAA Qualifier in Iowa City, Iowa, tonight. OU totaled 229.850 team points to trail only California (230.375). Iowa placed third (229.625) and also advanced to the championships. Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State qualified for the NCAAs earlier in the day.

OU got off to a quick start and led after the first four events. The Sooners struggled in the meet's finals two events, including an uncharacteristic low horizontal bar score, and fell to second place.

Individually, three OU gymnasts set new career highs. David Johnston set a new high on the pommel horse (9.45), Shannon Carrion's 9.525 on the parallel bars was a personal best and Gabe Hansen shattered his old mark on the horizontal bar with a 9.775.

The Sooners are back in action tomorrow when they compete in the NCAA Championship Team and All-Around Finals. Action begins at 7 p.m.
