WAIMANAOLO, Oahu - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team closed out their appearance in the 15th-Annual Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Wahine Invitational today in Waimanaolo, Oahu as they placed in a tie for sixth with Hawaii by adding a third round 311 to their total to finish at 941 (+77). The finish for the Sooners marked their best effort in the tournament since the 1995 campaign, when they took third by firing 928 strokes.
For the first time on the year senior Jaime Dello-Russo led the team as she strung together rounds of 78-79-77 to place in a tie for 24th at an 18-over-par, 234. Her stroke count is a season low in a tournament in which the format consists of three rounds and is one off her career-best three round stroke total, 233 (Roadrunner Invitational, 1998). Sophomore Wendy Martin finished one stroke behind Dello-Russo with rounds of 78-80-77(235, +19) to tie for 26th. Freshman Allison Johnson closed play with a 78 to finish in a tie for 29th at 236 (+20). Sophomore Betsy Berry ended her first tournament of the spring with a 79 in order to tie for 34th (239, +23). Sophomore Jennifer James also posted a 79, which moved her up four spots from yesterday into a tie for 37th (241, +51). Sophomore Jennifer Tannehill and senior Isabelle Blais competed as individuals and finished in a tie for 53rd and 68th, respectively. Tannehill's scorecard accounted for her 252 (+16) strokes, while Blais' showed 265 (+49).
OU returns to action April 10-11 as they host the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. For the past two tournaments on the Jimmie Austin/OU Golf Course the Sooners have won the team title as well as the individual crown. Martin fired a 219 a year ago, while Blais finished atop of the leaderboard in 1997 with a 224.
