NORMAN, Okla. - Solo home runs by first baseman Sean Murphy and rightfielder Jeff Bajenaru provided the necessary offense to give Oklahoma its third win with a 7-1 victory over Missouri Southern on Wednesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners (3-0) posted two runs in each the third, fourth and fifth innings, while OU pitchers held the Lions (0-2) to four hits for the game.
After Murphy doubled to open the third inning for OU, catcher Eliot Joyner plated Murphy with the second double of the inning to get the Sooners on the scoreboard. Third baseman Jason Bartlett, who finished the afternoon with a 2-for-3 effort, singled in Joyner to give Oklahoma an early 2-0 lead.
With the bases empty and OU leading 2-1 in the fourth, Bajenaru belted his first home run of the year off Missouri Southern starter Jerrod Reineke (0-1). The Sooners' aggressiveness on the basepaths, which resulted in four stolen bases in the game, helped them score the second run of the inning as shortstop Tommy Whiteman stole second and third base before being singled home by Murphy.
Two sacrifice flies by Bajenaru and leftfielder Lance Williams scored two more runs in the fifth and Murphy completed a 3-for-3 performance by homering to left-centerfield in the sixth.
The Lions' lone run was produced in the fourth inning when rightfielder Matt Meyr, who had singled to lead off the inning, stole second and scored on a RBI single by catcher Danny Pinkerton.
Starting pitcher Rick Park (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after working four innings and allowing only three hits and one earned run. Clint Dunbar added an impressive performance in relief of Park as he pitched three innings of one-hit ball and struck out three batters.
OU looks to avenge a 1999 home loss to Oklahoma City Univeristy this weekend as the schools face off on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman.
